04.06.18 Reading with the Scottish author Ron Butlin

Ron Butlin

Ron Butlin, currently one of the most renowned narrators and poets in Scotland, gave a colourful reading peppered with personal anecdotes at the Thurgau University of Teacher Education last Monday.

The multifaceted author began by telling his audience how his many travels as a younger writer, along with his exciting curriculum vitae are a source of inspiration for his writing, which he never plans, but allows to evolve.

The audience was reminded that the sound of the words and the melody of the verses are just as important as their meanings after Butlin read a poem in Scottish. «Don´t try to understand it, just listen to the sound of it…!» Butlin went on to read several more poems and excerpts out of his latest novel «Billionaire´s Banquet»:

The audience had the opportunity to experience real life Scotland on that evening, not only because of Butlin´s Scottish accent, but also due to the pictures of the Scottish landscape and descriptions of the weather which plays an essential role in his poems and stories, as is highlighted in the poem «A Recipe for Whisky». Everyone was invited to cheese and wine afterward he read this poem.

The reading was organised by Prof. Dr. Thomas Herman, head of the media and didactic centre and Gerit Jaritz, lecturer in English.
